I was just thinking about your susbtack the other day! Anyway this was so insightful just as i opened the app, will deffos try to be more intentional with istighfaar (because i feel like we can become strangers to some a’maal, when we can easily make it so accessible and easier for ourselves- its acc the small and consistent habits that are the most effective)
MashaAllah great write-up. Your commitment to istighfar, not just as an act of worship but as a transformative journey, resonates deeply and serves as a gentle reminder of the power of consistent, heartfelt repentance. You’ve turned a personal practice into a means of dawah, encouraging others to reconnect with Allah in a simple yet profound way.
Your story reminds me of the beautiful account of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal and his practice of istighfar. It is said that once, during his travels, Imam Ahmad sought shelter at a masjid but was denied entry by its caretaker. He ended up resting on the steps outside. A kind baker nearby saw him (not knowing who he was) and offered him a place to stay. That night, Imam Ahmad observed the baker constantly engaged in istighfar while preparing his dough. When asked about his practice, the baker explained that he made it a habit to always seek Allah’s forgiveness and that he had witnessed incredible blessings in his life as a result, with every dua he made being answered - except one. When Imam Ahmad inquired about the unanswered prayer, the baker replied, “To meet Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal.” The Imam, deeply moved, revealed his identity, showing how Allah had orchestrated their meeting in response to the baker’s consistent istighfar.
This story beautifully echoes your message that istighfar is not only a means of seeking forgiveness but also a gateway to unimaginable blessings and answered prayers. May Allah accept our istighfar and grant us His mercy. Ameen.
This is one of the most beautiful comments I’ve received, thank you for sharing the kind words and the story which is one I really love. I think istighfar has also transformed my heart’s attachment to things that don’t serve me. It really is win-win-win subhanallah
I love “Istifghar is the most win-win act of worship you could do. Not only are you in constant repentance, you are also facilitating the acceptance of your duaas.”

Absolutely! And eventually the small acts end up having the biggest impacts on our imaan. May Allah guide us closer to His perfect deen
Great read! I would’ve titled it “All These Sins That I’ve Done”
Thank you for reading!
